Residential Design
Taking inspiration from brutalist concepts, this apartment celebrates massive, raw, and natural materials, creating an expressive and unique space. Heavy- looking materials like concrete or brick will be unusually shaped, angular or geometric, with sections being differentiated for dramatic effect. Cubists practiced similar ideologies though extended their experimentation to challenging traditional perspectives. Partitions will separate the interior from the exterior, though will be carefully designed to cast sun filled shapes that will alter through one’s standing point and the sun. By implementing a monochromatic colour palette, the open floored space will encourage a utilitarian feel that is soothing with its limited ornamentation mainly relying on its materiality.
The client for Esquina is a developer who wants to convert a warehouse space in Surry Hills into apartments, inspired by the work and ethos of architect Frida Escobedo. This design brief includes a primary bedroom, at least one bathroom, a laundry and pantry and be focused around an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area.
